 Empire State Building Becomes Charter Member of Energy Star Building Label Program - Joins Clinton Administration Plan To Save Energy And Fight Global Warming.
The Empire State Building is taking action to reduce energy consumption and curb the pollution that contributes to global warming. The effort is part of a new Clinton Administration initiative called the Energy Star Building Label, creating a voluntary partnership between building executives, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy.
The Empire State Building is well on its way to reducing energy consumption. Recently, the building has replaced 6400 original windows with aluminum, double-hung, thermo-pane windows; completed an award-winning lighting retrofit project (wherein more than 30,000 light fixtures were replaced with energy efficient equivalents without decreasing light levels. In some areas, light levels were actually enhanced); converted chiller plants to dual steam and electric usage; and upgraded water pumps with high-efficiency electric models.
In conjunction with the Energy Star Building Label program, the Empire State Building is looking to current and leading-edge technology as it affects all aspects of building operation, including the exterior lighting system, the building infrastructure and the HVAC systems.
