An Inspirational Run to the Sky by Rob Jennings
On Tuesday, February 5, more than 150 athletes tackled one of New York Road Runners' quirkiest challenges, the Fleet Empire State Building Run-Up. The 25th annual edition of the race saw Paul Crake, 25, of Australia win his fourth consecutive men's title in 9 minutes, 40 seconds, and Kerstin Harbich, 27, of Germany, catch three-time women's champion Cindy Moll of Indianapolis to win her first title in 12:46
The race took on a bittersweet significance this year. In the aftermath of the September 11 World Trade Center disaster, competitors were now climbing New York City's tallest edifice. NYRR president and CEO Allan Steinfeld acknowledged the poignancy of the moment prior to the 10:30 a.m. start. "This is now the tallest building in New York City," he said. "That's unfortunate. That's nothing to be proud of."
Yet the assembled athletes nevertheless competed with a gusto that's characteristic of this invitation-only event. "We're not afraid to enjoy our large buildings, and we're not going to let terrorists alter the way we live our lives," said NYPD Sgt. David Duhan, 41, one of several police officers and firefighters who took part. Many competitors dedicated their race to the victims of the attacks, and Fleet, the Run-Up's title sponsor, issued a statement supporting their efforts: "Fleet salutes all of the runners, especially members of the NYPD and FDNY, and other participants running in honor of loved ones lost on September 11."
Crake is the only person ever to ascend the 86 flights in under 10 minutes, which he did for the first time in 2000 with a 9:53 clocking. His time in 2001 was 9:37, another record. This year the Australian seemed barely winded as he emerged onto the Observation Deck, the site of the finish line, nearly a minute in front of his closest competitor, Rudolf Reitberger, who would finish second in 10:36.
"I've gotten used to it," Crake said of running up 1,576 stairs.
Those interested in participating in this invitational event can put their request in writing with "Empire State Building Run-Up Application Request" on the front of the envelope and send it to:
