NEW YORK, Feb 1 (Reuters) - The returning champions from Austria both posted remarkable victories on Tuesday in the Empire State Building Run-Up, while the Big Apple's favorite social climber shined again at age 93 in the 28th annual race.

Rudolf Reitberger won the closest Empire race ever and Andrea Mayr became the first woman to break the 12-minute barrier with a winning time of 11:51 despite wearing a cast for a broken wrist.

Almost as much attention was lavished on the race's slowest finisher, eldest statesman Chico Scimone, 93, of Sicily, who completed the event for the 14th year in a row. He was timed in 49 minutes 28 seconds as the last of 136 finishers.

"I feel great that I finished," said Scimone, who plays piano at a hotel bar in Taormina. "This is like a present I give to myself every year."

Reitberger overtook German Thomas Dold on the 75th floor and held the 20-year-old at bay the rest of the way up the 1,576 steps of the fabled skyscraper.

Running side-by-side the last few meters, Dold lunged in vain at the finish, tumbling to the deck of the 86th floor Observatory. They were both timed in 10 minutes 24 seconds.

Israeli identical twins Dan Alterman and Ran Alterman followed at 10:50 and 11:00, respectively.

"This was absolutely the best race of my life," Reitberger, 33, said, conceding it might be his last New York victory.

"He's a really strong young guy," the goateed Reitberger said about Dold. "He's the future of this race."

Dold, a college student in Stuttgart, agreed. "Next year I think I'll have a big chance to win," said Dold, who said he owns a world record of 5:41 for running a mile backwards.

Mayr crushed the women's field with her record run, finishing one minute, 19 seconds ahead of runner-up American Cindy Moll-Harris, a four-time winner of the event. American Amy Eleanor was third in 13:57.

The lanky Austrian, who was second in last year's European mountain running championships and third in the world championships, broke her right wrist when she slipped on some ice during her training.

"When you are running, you are in another world. You don't feel pain so much," said Mayr. "I don't know how I did it."
