On Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2009, 13 lucky couples took their love to new heights as they said “I do” atop the world-famous Empire State Building in an all-day event presented by the iconic landmark and Brides.com.
Selected from more than 400 entries in a nationwide contest on Brides.com, the 13 winning couples exchanged vows on February 14, the only day The Empire State Building opens its doors for weddings. This year, the brides and grooms not only celebrated weddings and vow renewals, but for the very first time in The Empire State Building’s history, one couple – two brides -- took part in a same-sex commitment ceremony.
Brides.com editors lent their expertise by working with famed event planner and designer Michelle Rago to transform the space at The Empire State Building into a wedding wonderland and provided consultations for one-on-one style and beauty to each couple. The couples exchanged vows in individual private ceremonies surrounded by 20 of their closest friends and family members. Each sky-high ceremony concluded with a champagne toast and a VIP trip to the 86th floor Observatory.
Weddings on Valentine’s Day have been a tradition at the Empire State Building since 1994. Over the past 16 years, more than 220 couples have been married at ESB in the Valentine’s Day event. Last year, couples came from as far as Great Britain and eight different states to exchange vows at the building.
Couples looking to marry, renew their vows or affirm their commitment to one another, please check the website periodically for 2010 competition announcements. Applicants will be asked to submit their personal love stories, a photo and reasons for wanting to have their ceremony at the most romantic place on earth. Winners are selected based on the originality and creativity of their submissions, as well as their connections to one of the world’s most famous buildings. Stay tuned and good luck!
